Sculptor in Residence: Charterhouse School.
September 2011.

Charterhouse Quatercentenary crest

Charterhouse was founded in 1611. As part of the quatercentenary anniversary celebrations of this prestigious boarding school, Paul will be starting as Sculptor in Residence. The residency begins in September for one year.

During this time, a new body of work will be developed in the on-site studio. Part of the residency will include teaching sculpture across the school's 13-18 age range.

Paul is currently relocating his practice to Surrey, in the South East of England.

'Function' in The Guardian. September, 2011.

“Ever since Marcel Duchamp exhibited his “found object” Urinal almost a century ago, art’s relationship with utility has been brought into question. What would happen to its artistic identity if Urinal was taken from its gallery mounting, replaced in the gents and peed into?… Here, four contemporary artists – Nicola Dale, Mike Gent, Alistair Owen and Paul Lewthwaite (work pictured) – present art that looks useful but is utterly useless. Here are prosthetic tools missing vital parts, a shelf rendered impractical by being made of cardboard, a water cabinet designated as sculptural and a roll of woodchip wallpaper with every single chip obsessively hand-coloured. All of which suggests that, while designers might go directly to the solution, perhaps artists are well ahead: already round the bend. Bloc Projects, to 17 Sep” RC.

The Guardian, 3rd September 2011, p36.

'Function', Bloc Projects, Sheffield, UK.
Friday 2nd – 17th September 2011.

Function at Bloc Gallery

Function is a group exhibition curated by Leslie Guy at Bloc Projects, Sheffield, UK, exploring the lives of objects and their materials. It features Paul's 'Non-Whaling Tools' alongside the work of artists Alistair Owen, Mike Gent and Nicola Dale. Guy states:

"The work selected belongs somewhere between use and ornament, but is often neither. Equipment is rendered useless, and everyday materials such as water or wallpaper become a surface for exploring states of mind. Operating in a realm of aesthetic function these are tools for imaginative thought."

The exhibition is featured in The Guardian, Guide and Exhibitionist: week in pictures sections (see above). The show is also accompanied by a commissioned Discourse text by Becky Shaw.

The exhibition is open at Bloc Projects, 71 Eyre Lane, Sheffield S1 4RB, UK. Maps and opening times are available via the Bloc contact pages.
